Technical Analysis: Refrigeration Physics

The Science of the Refrigerant Cycle.

Technical AC repair is not about "adding Freon." it is about achieving the exact thermodynamic balance between sub-cooling and superheat.

Understanding Sub-cooling

Sub-cooling is the temperature drop of the liquid refrigerant below its saturation point as it leaves the condenser coil. It ensures that only 100% liquid refrigerant reaches the metering device. Without proper sub-cooling, the system loses efficiency and risks "flashing" refrigerant back into a gas too early.

Understanding Superheat

Superheat is the temperature rise of the gas refrigerant above its saturation point as it leaves the evaporator. This ensures that only 100% gas reaches the compressor. If superheat is too low, liquid refrigerant can "slug" the compressor, leading to immediate mechanical destruction.
